Introduction & Commitment
Every child deserves safety, dignity, and the opportunity to thrive. In Mandera County, children face risks including harmful cultural practices, child labor, early marriages, and limited access to protection services. HIWYA’s Child Protection Program strengthens local systems to ensure that vulnerable children are protected, heard, and supported.
We are committed to building resilient, community-owned child protection structures that respond effectively to risks while promoting long-term well-being.
Key Program Interventions
Child Protection Technical Working Groups: Supporting quarterly sub-county coordination meetings to strengthen reporting, referral, and response mechanisms.
Community Surveillance Networks: Training local volunteers to identify and respond to children at risk of FGM, child labor, and abuse.
Health & Legal Collaboration: Engaging nurses, clinical officers, chiefs, and police officers to strengthen anti-medicalization efforts and improve prosecution pathways.
School-Based Rights Clubs: Promoting awareness of child rights and empowering students to become peer advocates.
Cross-Border Advocacy: Addressing risks linked to Mandera’s porous borders through coordinated awareness and referral systems.
Building Sustainable Protection Systems
Beyond immediate interventions, HIWYA strengthens institutional collaboration between community leaders, health facilities, education officials, and the Department of Children Services. Through data-driven monitoring and participatory planning, we are building a responsive child protection ecosystem that ensures no child is left behind.
